Superintendent Barnard’s Summer of Global Learning
This summer, Manchester-Shortsville Central School District Superintendent Christopher Barnard had the unique opportunity to travel to Japan and South Korea as part of a professional development program with 30 superintendents and educators from across the United States. Funded by a scholarship from the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS), this two-week journey in July offered valuable insights into East Asian education and culture.
Barnard was one of five New York superintendents selected for the NYSCOSS scholarship through a competitive process. Throughout the trip, Barnard connected with educational leaders and explored educational practices in Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Seoul. Each stop provided insights into Japan’s deep traditions and South Korea’s modern educational approaches.
“The trip reinforced for me the power of travel to bring perspective, provide new experiences, and demonstrate the immense importance of relationships. Connecting with individuals from such varied backgrounds was truly inspiring,” Barnard reflected.
Over the past couple of weeks, Barnard has been sharing his experiences with students, staff and the community through presentations to the local Rotary Club and Board of Education, discussing the importance of global awareness. Barnard’s hope is that one day similar opportunities can be available to Red Jacket students, so they too can benefit from life-changing global experiences.
“A travel experience like the one I had this summer reminds you of the small place we each hold in the larger world. I hope our students come to understand, and maybe experience, that for themselves,” Barnard added.
Superintendent Barnard’s journey aligns with Red Jacket’s goal of helping students become well-rounded and prepared to engage with a more connected world
