Red Jacket SRO Honored for Dedication to School Safety
Deputy John Potter, School Resource Officer for Red Jacket Schools, was honored by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office for his continued efforts to protect students and staff and for his broader contributions to school safety in New York State.
Deputy Potter received the recognition during the annual Law Day Awards Ceremony, held on Friday, May 16, as part of National Police Week, which ran from May 12 through May 17. The ceremony highlights outstanding service by law enforcement officers throughout the county.
Known for his strong presence and daily dedication to school safety, Deputy Potter has become an integral part of the Red Jacket school community. In addition to his responsibilities on campus, he has been actively involved in advancing a state-level initiative aimed at improving school safety protocols.
Working alongside Senator Pam Helming, other state lawmakers, and Superintendent Chris Barnard, Deputy Potter has helped develop a proposed measure that would require the Office of Children and Family Services and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to notify local school districts and law enforcement before releasing a felony offender under the age of 18. The legislation aims to give schools time to implement appropriate safety measures while also preparing for the reintegration and support of the returning student.
Deputy Potter’s contributions go beyond policy and patrol. He is known for building meaningful relationships with students and families, offering support, guidance, and a steady presence that helps foster a safe and welcoming school environment.
His recognition by the Sheriff’s Office reflects the value of his work both within the Red Jacket district and at the state level, as efforts continue to strengthen safety in schools across New York.
