Budget Information

Dear Red Jacket Families,

During our School Board Meeting on Wednesday, August 11, our Board of Education approved resolutions authorizing a reduction in programs and services, and a subsequent reduction in workforce. The process used to arrive at this extremely complex and emotional decision began last winter. Our School Board’s decision was not in haste, and all factors leading to this very difficult judgment were appropriately considered. Since January alone, our School Board has conducted six School Board meetings studying and planning our budget and subsequent impacts for the school year 10-11 and beyond should the State not have a budget and reduce funding to all schools across the State. As communicated in our April and May school newsletter, we based our budget and program on flat funding from the State. We also shared our plan should the funding not be forth coming. As of August 11, when it was necessary for the school district to set the tax levy for the up-coming school year, the State did not provide level funding to Red Jacket, necessitating the district to implement our budget reduction blocks.

Reluctantly, I recommended to the Board and they adopted resolutions to reduce staff according to the provisions of State Law.

I regret to inform you that a number of our staff members will receive a reduction in force notification during the next two weeks and will not be returning to Red Jacket this fall. The positions affected by these reductions most likely will require some student schedule changes. I ask for your understanding and patience during this emotional time.

Despite these difficult times, and above all else, our focus remains on ensuring that all students receive the best possible education within existing resources. Thank you for your continued support of the Red Jacket program.

Sincerely,

Robert Leiby
